South Korea’s new top competition official speaks to MLex about the enforcement challenges ahead in an increasingly digital world
December 2019
As home to some of the world’s leading technology companies and one of the globe’s most connected countries, South Korea is no stranger to the regulatory challenges posed by emerging technologies — whether it’s Big Data, artificial intelligence, all-pervasive social media networks or giant online retailers.
Enter Joh Sung-wook, who took over the top job at the Korea Fair Trade Commission two months ago. She is the KFTC’s first female head; the first South Korean woman to be named a professor at Seoul National University; and the first to receive a PhD in economics at Harvard University. She is no stranger to tough challenges.
Joh sat down with MLex in Seoul recently for an interview of almost two hours. In this special report, we reveal the vision she has for the KFTC and the person behind one of Asia’s leading antitrust agencies.
